The principles of shape-selective catalysis have been comprehensively reviewed by a number of authors. Therefore, the purpose of this article is not to review the subject matter in general, but to summarize the impact of shape-selective catalysis on the petroleum and petrochemical industries. Special emphasis is placed on medium-pore zeolites. To provide a brief introduction to the fundamentals of zeolite catalysis, we have included two short sections which describe the relation between catalyst structure and catalytic activity and the principal methods of achieving molecular shape selectivity.
