The article describes in detail the technology of underwater TIG welding and manual arc welding with covered electrodes of natural gas pipelines in the Frigg gas field in the North Sea under hyperbaric conditions. Detailed attention is given to the effect of pressure (15 bar) on the arc morphology, the behavior of the melting pool, the composition of the deposited metal, and its sensitivity to cold cracking. The welding operations performed in summer 1975 are reviewed. The inspection and testing of welds is also dealt with in detail. Future welding programs are outlined.
