Investigations were carried out on the increase of the bearing capacity of continuous footings in a row, which occurs when the parallel footings are placed at various distance from each other. The eccentricity and inclination of the soil reaction exerted on the footings at each end of the row were studied as well. The results of model tests carried out with a Taylor-Schneebeli apparatus, are compared with those of a theoretical method which allows for the effect of soil self-weight. It is proved that the decrease of the spacing between continuous footings results in an increase of the bearing capacity.
