A procedure is described for study of the noise of field-emission cathodes that allows a large number of measurements to be performed and processed and single curent fluctuations over time intervals of up to 1 day to be recorded. The fluctuations of field-emission current of pyrolytic graphite cathodes are studied. A substantial reduction of the noise level after shaping as well as a deviation of the high-current branch of the current-fluctuation distribution from a normal distribution for small currents are observed.
