This article presents an overview of treeing based on the present state of knowledge as applied to polyethylene insulation. In spite of the diverse nature and wide occurrence of treeing in all insulation materials, surprisingly little is known about the major factors which affect it. It is the purpose of this presentation to provide a background from which cable makers and power company engineers may derive a broad understanding of treeing in polyethylene and crosslinked polyethylene insulated power dables. Included are results from a continuing study being conducted at the Research and Development facilities of Union Carbide, Bound Brook, N. J.
