Many microstructural features of the WC phase in WC-Co hardmetals are introduced during the milling of the powders; further changes occur in carbide substructure and binder-phase composition as a result of the sintering treatment. Techniques have been developed which enable the development of the microstructure of hardmetals to be following during manufacture from the initial powder stage to the fully sintered product. Examples are given of how microstructral parameters (including binder-phase composition and dislocation distribution) are affected by using various milling, sintering, and annealing treatments. Refs.
