The mixing enthalpies in the Pd-Si system have been determined at 1600 K using a SETARAM high-temperature calorimeter. The experimental results show strongly negative DELTA H values over the whole concentration range with a maximum amounting to minus 72. 2 kJ/g-atom for the concentration of the highest melting intermetallic compound in this system, namely, Pd//2Si. The concentration dependence has been analyzed in terms of the occurrence of ″associations″ having the stoichiometric composition Pd//2Si. The results are discussed in connection with the glass formation ability of the Pd-Si alloy melts.
