Relationships have been derived between the delta - and gamma -stabilizing capacities of the alloying elements and the positions of the transformation boundaries on their binary diagrams. A general expression has been found for the phase constitution of highly alloyed Cr-Ni steels as a function of the alloy contents and solidification rate. A structural diagram has been constructed which is more accurate than its predecessors in forecasting the phase constitution of 18/8 Cr-Ni steel castings.
