When purchasing alloys and in making alloy additions to molten metal, consideration should be given to the solution rate of the alloy. Basically, there are three methods by which alloys go into solution. When alloys are added to molten metal, a layer of metal solidifies on the surface of the cold alloy. It the melting point of the alloy is above that of the molten metal, it will not melt, but will dissolve into the bath after the shell has melted away. If the melting point of the alloy is below that of the molten metal, it will become liquid before the shell melts away and will mix into the bath when the shell melts. If the alloy has exothermic qualities and is reactive when added to the molten metal, the shell that is formed will be porous and the alloy will react quickly, melting the shell and dispersing throughout the molten metal.
