ADHESION OF MONTMORILLONITE CLAY TO CELLULOSE AND THE EFFECT OF PARTICULATE FILLERS ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF PAPER

In order to determine whether fillers reduce the mechanical properties of paper, the adhesion of a model clay, sodium montmorillonite, to cellulose was compared with the adhesion of cellulose to itself. Handsheets made from clay-treated alpha pumps were about as strong as handsheets made without clay and had the same bonded area. A pulp containing hemicellulose gradually lost montmorillonite while being stirred in water because the hemicellulose caused the clay to agglomerate into grains. Explanation has been given why fillers weaken hemicellulose paper.
