The most common heating medium for low temperature processes is steam. In many factories the steam is generated from a central boiler house and distributed to various points of use. This method of heating invariably has heat losses associated with the boiler, distribution system, flash steam and condensate pipework. One very large use of this low temperature steam is in the heating of vats and tanks which are used in a wide variety of industries. Because of the high load potential in this field, the British Gas Council and others have devoted considerable research and development to a system whereby these vats and tanks can be direct fired using a gaseous fuel. This development enables L. P. Gas direct fired burners to be fired into existing small bore steam pipes with very much higher overall thermal efficiencies. The many benefits to be derived from this new idea can result in L. P. Gas being competitive, in given circumstances, with alternative forms of energy.
