Adding programmable-gain amplifiers (PGA's) to microprocessor-based data-acquisition systems can often eliminate the need for separate instrumentation amplifiers for each analog input channel, saving space and money. They also simplify autoranging over wide dynamic ranges when under processor control. Such implementations require little additional software and exact only a slight penalty in throughput.
