For checking phase-metering equipment, discrete phase-shifts specified to high accuracy may sometimes be preferable to less accurate continuous phase-shifts. Discrete phase calibrators have thus gained wide acceptance. The main component of the calibrator is the discrete phase-setting device, which usually consists of two frequency-divider channels. The design, operation, and methods of checking discrete phase-setting devices are discussed.
