Short piles are being used together with long piles as foundation of a structure, for instance, such a case as a bearing stratum for the piles inclines steeply. Further, wall-like piles of which shape are not like column but a wall are getting to be used in recent years. The component of deflection to shearing as well as that of bending becomes an essential element to estimate the behavior of these short piles or wall-like piles when they are subjected to lateral loads. This paper is aimed at presenting a numerical expression to estimate the behavior of piles, in which the effect of shear deflection is specially being taken into account. Calculations were made for reinforced concrete piles having different size both in diameters and lengths, and the effect of shear deflection particularly to the behavior of short piles was made clear. By applying the expression, the distribution ratio of a lateral load for each pile in a group of piles having sizes was determined. Further, a comparison was made between both cases when the shearing effect was considered and when it was left out of account.
