Smart modules help one get maximum performance and flexibility from the adjustable-speed drive system. Smart modules are installed ahead of the drive and supply the analog reference signal previously provided by the speed command potentiometer. A feedback sensor, which is mounted to the motor shaft, returns a digital pulsed signal to the control where it is converted to a proportional rate value and is compared to the set speed. The analog command signal is then adjusted automatically so that any difference between the set speed and actual speed is forced to zero.
