Solving the difficulties involved in data exchange among database systems is becoming paramount as organizations attempt to optimize their operations through increased automation and computer integration. The database industry has provided users with a multitude of database systems that differ widely in architecture and functionality and reside on a variety of hardware platforms. This article introduces a new Application Layer protocal, Remote Database Access (RDA), which promises to provide the mechanism that allows communication between heterogeneous database systems.
