Modern methods of experimental determination of the angle of friction ** phi k of soils - a parameter of the equation of the law governing dry Coulomb friction - do not enable us to obtain a constant value for it. Meanwhile, if the law governing Coulomb dry friction is correct for describing the ultimate shear strength of a soil of the material composition under consideration, the only ** phi k value for it should be determined experimentally. The results of tests of quartz sand of medium fitness and average density ( rho n equals 1. 62-1. 65 g/cm**3 in the air-dry state, which was removed from the construction site of the Kanev pumped-storage power plant, are examined below; the results demonstrate the correctness of this position, and confirm the independence of the ** phi k value on the type of apparatus used.
