The use of automatic inspection of the linear dimensions (extent of corrosion) of the refractories in working surfaces would make it possible to prolong the campaign of glass-melting furnaces with an increase in the yield of glass by increasing the thermal load of the furnace using thermal insulation to reduce heat loss through the lining, etc. An indirect method of measuring the losses from the temperature head between the internal and external surfaces of the refractory was used to monitor the thermal radiation of the lining. Direct measurements of the destruction of the internal structures of the furnace were made and these were compared with the working measurements and calculations in order to get practical confirmation of the experimental measurements. The character of the destruction was in total agreement with the measurements. The indirect determination of the linear dimensions of the lining can used as a basis for designing an automatic system for diagnosing the state of the refractory walls in working glass-melting furnaces. 4 refs.
