This paper reports a theoretical and experimental study of surge in aerodynamic systems with one or two radial flow fans connected in series. For a mathematical simulation a lumped parameter model is established. The systems in question are lumped into typical components as fans, pipes, mass storage devices and throttles. Special attention is given to the transient behavior of the fans. The complete set of equations is solved numerically. Introducing some approximations analytical solutions can be obtained by means of Galerkin's method. The experiments were carried out using systems which are approximated by lumped parameter models.
