It is established that barium niobate (Ba//4Nb//2O//9) depending on the synthesis temperature (below or above 1400 K), crystallizes in two polymorphic hexagonal modifications - alpha and beta **1. The beta **1 modification is characterized by the presence of reversible phase transformations related to a slight distortion of its structure. Two modifications of barium niobate existing below 120 K and in the 120-520 K range possess polar properties (a pyroelectric effect, second optical harmonic generation).
