Grinding can effectively replace such standard methods as milling, planning and turning in removing stock, but there must be a thorough understanding of system component interaction. It is necessary to include all costs when making a comparison with conventional machining-- the cost to buy, change and sharpen the tools, plus setup and handling time. Fully understanding precision abrasive machining can mean the difference between the economic operation and an expensive misjudgment.
