An experimental inquiry was made into the irregular flow behavior of HDPE melts in short capillary passages. Three kinds of experimental methods were used: a study flow properties by using a Koka-type flow tester or a capillary rheometer, observation of flow patterns in a reservoir or on extrudates by using a test piece with flow marker of carbon black, and observation of flow patterns at the capillary inlet or in the capillary passage by using polarized light. Experimental results are presented and discussed in terms of four kinds of extrudate types which were observed - regular flow, spiralling flow, melt fracture flow, and semisolid state fracture flow induced by pressure.
