Plastic flame spraying is the process of passing a plastic powder through a flame and depositing the melted material as a relatively thick protective coating. Various thermoplastic materials are available for plastic flame spraying. These include compositions of ethylene vinyl acetate, nylon and polyethylene. Two materials, Surlyn and Nucrel which are ethylene methacrylic acid polymers, provides strong bonding to metals and high resistance to chemicals and environmental fallout. Another material is Envelon, an ethylene arylic acid co-polymer. The coating is ideal for surface corrosion protection where conditions are severe. Salt-spray cabinet and salt-water testing confirm that the coating has excellent corrosion resistance. Presented are the various advantages of plastic flame spraying and its process.
