A calculation method proposed earlier for a district heating system with one pumping station situated at the source of heat is extended to a district heating system with any number of pumping substations on outgoing and returning lines of a ramified network. It is concluded that the most economic approach is to design transit and main lines of a district heating system without pumping substations if pressures in the pipelines for optimal performance can be maintained within strength and reliability limits. The method proposed allows selection of the optimal pressure gradient and number of pumping substations.
