The state of development work in the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany dealing with the use of ceramics for high temperature gas turbine engine parts is summarized. The advantages of silicon nitride over silicon carbide are pointed out, as well as the differences between reaction sintered and hot pressed silicon nitride. Some finished parts are illustrated.
