While the heat treatment of iron castings can result in definite benefits in many cases, the properties that can be obtained in the as-cast condition are such that the added cost of heat treatment is not always justified. An overall review is given of the various structures of cast iron, as well as the heat treatment process, to clarify the situation and make any decision regarding the need for heat treatment easier. Recommended procedures are given for heat treating engineering iron castings.
