PUTTING AN OFFICE BUILDING ON ICE: A CASE STUDY.

This article reports on the design and first full year of operation of an 'ice pond,' a large seasonal ice production and storage system. The ice pond is used to cool a large commercial office building in an office complex located near Princeton, New Jersey. At the time of this writing, the first full year of operation of the ice pond has just been completed. This article presents results on the performance of the ice pond in the ice-making mode and in the ice-using (building cooling) mode. Considerations that went into the design of the pond and on the progress that were made in analyzing data on the performance of the pond are discussed. Refs.
