The purpose of this paper is to describe all partial processes from beginning to end of solidification which play an important part in the possible occurrence of a hot tear in the cold casting. Different types of solidification stresses may be the cause of hot tearing unless the alloy has good hot tearing resistance and/or a good healing (or interdendritic feeding) capacity. Healing capacity is determined by the temperature-dependent solid fraction and crystal morphology. Experimental determinations of interdendritic feeding capacity of Al-Si alloys with 1 to 7. 5% Si and the effects of grain refining and application of external pressure are reported. 50 refs.
