The authors describe microstructure and crystalline structures of sputtered CoNi films on polyimide (CoNi/pol). Magnetic properties over the composition range (0-100 at% Ni) were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Magnetic properties of CoNi/Cr and CoNi/pol were studied as a function of Ni content. A maximum H//c value for CoNi/Cr was obtained at about 36 at. % Ni content. H//c values for CoNi/pol were low (below 100 Oe) for all compositions. CoNi/Cr microstructures were composed of island-like grains (-100 nm) with smaller (-10 nm) subgrains over the entire composition range. No island-like grains were observed in CoNi/pol. Crystalline structures were determined by electron diffraction. CoNi/Cr and CoNi/pol consisted of a hexagonal close packed (HCP) phase, a mixture of HCP and face-centered cubic (FCC) phases, or a FCC phase depending on Ni content. Co//6 //4Ni//3//6/Cr, where maximum Hc was observed, consisted of a mixture of HCP and FCC. The high H//c CoNi/Cr was related to microstructures and crystalline structures.
