The results are presented of the first systematic study on the mechanisms of the secondary ion emission (SIE) from transition metals bombarded by 6 keV hydrogen ions with 10** minus **4 A multiplied by (times) cm** minus **2 current density. To obtain comparative data, the surface of the targets was bombarded by argon ions. It is shown that bombardment with hydrogen ions can be used in secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) for analytical purposes.
