The original SCMP (Sulfonated Chemi Mechanical Pulping) process, as developed by CIP Research Ltd. and implemented in two commercial installations, is carried out with liquid phase cooking. It was later found that sulfonation may also be carried out in the vapor phase provided the chips are thoroughly impregnated with sufficient chemicals prior to cooking. This paper outlines some of the laboratory work which led to these conclusions and which was followed by the successful implementation of a 400 t/d vapor phase SCMP plant in the NBIP mill in Dalhousie.
