Currently, various substituted succinic acids and their derivatives are finding extremely diverse applications. One of the most important fields of application for such compounds is the improvement of lubricating oil service properties. Previously, the authors had synthesized S-substituted derivatives of thiosuccinic acid by reactions involving the addition of esters of thioglycolic acid to dialkyl esters of maleic acid in the presence of piperidine. In the work reported in this paper they studied the effects of these esters on the antiwear, antioxidant, and detergent properties of the oils D-11, DS-11, and DS-14. With the aim of establishing the optimal concentration of these esters to impart a high level of service properties to the oils, tests were conducted at various additive concentrations. Test results are presented which show that the synthesized esters have not only a high level of anticorrosion and detergent-dispersant properties, but also good stabilizing properties; these compounds can be used as multifunctional additives in lubricating oils.
