In this brief review the author considers the origins of concrete and portland cements; the varieties of portland; factors affecting strength such as hydration, compaction, curing, temperature; the influence of aggregate types on cement mixtures. Several appendices cover such aspects as workability testing, bulking of sand, recommended minimum strengths of concrete, examples of trial mixes and tables of trial mixes, forms stripping and reinforcing and prestressing.
