For the industrial boiler, only in a few cases can flue gas desulfurization improve upon the purchase of low-sulfur fuels. Such circumstances as a once-through sodium alkali system, with subsequent sale of sodium and sulfur values to a nearby paper mill or an installation where ammonium sulfate fertilizers are an attrative by-product are exceptions to this generalization. For some owners, where captive, high-sulfur fuel supplies offer substantial economic alternatives over externally purchased fuel, FGD may provide a real opportunity to realize improved energy economics. All such cases, however, will be the exception rather than the rule.
