Hot formed workpieces such as drop or hammer forgings, upset components, extrusions and rolled rings, have advantageous properties in particular with respect to low deviations in strength values, good ductility properties and high fatigue resistance. This is why hot-formed components are used whenever utmost safety is required, for instance for automotive construction, airplane construction, in turbine and machine building. In spite of the outstanding advantages, there is keen competitive pressure from other production processes and from other materials, from castings to sheet metal, sintered components and even plastics.
