The compression strength of shipping boxes gains increasing significance due to stock-keeping as well as to pallet and container transport. For this reason, in a series of tests the different kinds of physical stresses have been investigated which the corrugated material is exposed to, and the components of the compression strength of the shipping boxes were analysed. It is shown that it is not the crush deformation as occuring with the edge-crush-test which prevailingly defines the compression strength of the shipping boxes, but mainly the buckling strength of the corrugated board. Nevertheless, with the aid of adequate calculating formulas, in comparing tests a correlation could be found between these kinds of stress, taking into consideration circuit of the box and thickness of the board. Finally, it is pointed out that the bending stiffness represents no relevant criterion for the compression strength.
