On the basis of shadow and interference pictures, and also measurements of the pressure by means of piezoelectric transducers, a study is made of the propagation of a plane shock wave with Mach numbers between 1.2 and 5 and initial pressure p0 between .6&middot103 and .29&middot105 Newtons per square meter over a small rectangular cavity located in the direction transverse to the propagation of the wave. The object is to investigate the unsteady interaction of the shock wave and the wake flow with the cavity, and the quasistable hot gas flow around the cavity behind the shock wave, and to compare this with results from wind tunnels.
