With the start of the Commission for the European Communities' DRIVE II program in 1992, the University of Leeds had a major involvement. It had six projects involving the Institute of Transport Studies (ITS) and two involving the School of Computer Studies. In three of these Leeds is the Coordinating Partner. These new projects built upon previous work in the fields of route guidance, traffic control, pedestrian safety, safety evaluation and bus company data management, and will lead to trails in different cities and regions of new advanced uses of information technology in transport. The Science and Engineering Research Council and Economic and Social Research Council continued to play an important role in funding basic research on some of the issues involved.
