In Berlin's jubilee year the Bewag (city utility) can look back on 75 years of public district heat supply from power plants. Initially the author describes the first supply of heat to the Charlottenburg town hall in the year 1912, and subsequently he recalls the evolution of district heating in Berlin up to the present. On the basis of cogeneration of heat and power, the connected value has been raised to the 2,400 MW of today. The main subject of this report is the Reuter West district heat project, requiring capital investment of DM 700 mill. for the heating center in the new heat/power plant, for large pipelines to extend the combined network and for further district heat distribution with suppliers' service installation to supply new connections of 55,000 dwelling units. The author describes the type of construction used for the pipeline tunnels. He also explains an interesting supply concept used for the Siemens Works which uses heat from the return flow of the network.
