In the chemical process industries, end face mechanical seals are the sealing devices used on over 80% of rotating equipment. The majority of existing rotating equipment has been converted to mechanical seals and mechanical seals are being specified on most new equipment. Design and selection factors are featured in this comprehensive article along with materials of construction and seal recommendations for pulp and paper applications. Recommendations are given how to select seal face materials for specific applications.
