A discussion is presented on the implication of the marine environment and offshore industrial activity on hydrographic surveying, designed to acquaint the engineer with the reliability and accuracy to be expected from surveys at sea. Silent range conversions are dealt with and it is shown how the advanced signal processing and computer assisted analysis of the data received enables the slant ranges to be converted to depths.
