Tig welding with consumable inserts and inert gas backing is the preferred method for welding either carbon steel or stainless steel piping. Consumable inserts help prevent cracking in Type 304 stainless and centerline thinning. Other quality control methods discussed are inert gas root shielding, soluble dams (discs that dissolve in liquid and used as ID supports) and similar dam materials.
