US South Central market conditions remained steady in August 2000, while the tone turned from bad to worse in some areas. Pulpwood and chip prices were cheap-but not heading any lower in the third quarter. A general consensus held that only a severe hurricane season could move roundwood prices higher in the remaining months of the year, with hardwood more vulnerable than pine. Pine and hardwood prices remained `stuck' in an unusually narrow range in the third quarter.
