As far back as 1946, aluminum coal cars have been running on American railroads. It was then that ACF Industries built a 70-ton hopper. In 1959 and 1960, Pullman Standard manufactured the famous 'Silversides' for the Southern Railway. And in the early 70s, Cleveland Electric acquired a number of aluminum gondolas from Greenville Steel Car Company. But despite the history, aluminum coal cars have yet to gain wide acceptance.
