Equivalent circuits have been derived for microstrip ring and varactor-tuned ring resonators. It was found that the resonant frequency is slightly lower as the coupling gap becomes smaller. The effects are small and generally negligible unless a very small coupling gap is used. Varactor-tuned ring resonators were developed with a tuning bandwidth of up to 15% of the operating frequency. The use of a dielectric covering layer reduced the insertion loss of the resonant ring to less than 1 dB.
