Baltic Sea icebreaking took a considerable step forward at the beginning of 1986 when the new icebreaker Otso entered service with the Finnish Board of Navigation from the Helsinki shipyard of Wartsila. Total bridge control and a propulsion system using cycloconverters for motor control are two of many new concepts in the first of two Wartsila-built ships.
