Shot noise limited photodetection sensitivity with VHF bandwidth is possible with careful design. Multimode lasers can be used below their mode-beating frequencies. Measurements of the bandwidth can be accomplished by a very reliable technique that does not require extensive instrumentation. Data are presented graphically.
