A photoacoustic spectrometer using an open-ended detector has been developed for doing in situ measurements. It makes use of a UV light guide and a differential microphone assembled in between two identical cells, one illuminated and the other not. The characteristics of this detector are expressed in terms of sensitivity to noise ratio. The equipment has enabled the authors to perform original applications of photoacoustic spectroscopy, especially in vivo measurements of skin optical absorption.
