Electron microscopy and optical metallography of Nimonic 80A (REX-664) specimens fractured during creep illustrate the importance of precipitate morphology and dislocation structure in understanding the creep ductility data obtained for two commercial heat treatments. Homogeneous dislocation structure is related to w-crack formation and higher ductilities. Inhomogeneous dislocation structure is related to r-type cavities and lower creep ductility. A ductility trough was detected and seems to be related to a grain boundary carbide transformation.
