Harmful contaminant particulates can be divided into those which originate from the earth or its atmosphere and those which occur as by-products of filtration aids, from manufacturing or assembly sources, or from the closed environment through which the liquid or gas is circulated. The former are described as 'terrestrial particulate', the latter 'acquired particulate'. The author discusses improved techniques for sampling and analysis of these particles. Refs.
